Holmes and Watson's evening conversation is interrupted by the arrival of a new client, Mary Sutherland. She is investigating the sudden disappearance of her betrothed, a man named Mr. Hosmer Angel. Her stepfather, Mr. Windibank, strongly disapproves of the match, because it will take her inheritance out of the family, but she is determined to find and reunite with Angel.
